Solving the error formula backwards

The margin of error is E = z sigma / sqrt(n). Solving for n gives n = (z sigma / E)^2. With sigma = 10, E = 2, and 95% confidence: (1.96 x 10 / 2)^2 = 96.04, which rounds up to 97 people.

Always round up

Rounding down would give a slightly larger error than requested, so the tool always rounds up to the next whole sample. Unknown sigma? Run a small pilot study first, or use 0.5 for proportions as the conservative choice.

Sample Size Calc FAQs

How many samples for SD 10, margin of error 2, 95% confidence?
97. n = (1.96 x 10 / 2)^2 = 96.04, rounded up. The defaults are preloaded.
What is the sample size formula?
n = (z x sigma / E)^2. z comes from the confidence level, sigma is the population SD, E is the margin of error you will accept.
Why round up instead of nearest?
Rounding down to 96 would push the actual error just above E = 2. Rounding up guarantees the target is met.
What if I do not know sigma?
Use a pilot sample's SD, a published estimate, or for proportions use p = 0.5, which gives the largest (safest) sample size.
