Rounding modes

Half up is the schoolbook rule (2.5 becomes 3). Half even (banker's rounding) sends exact halves to the nearest even digit, removing bias in large datasets. Floor and ceiling always go down or up; truncate simply cuts digits toward zero.

Decimals vs significant figures

Decimal places fix digits after the point (money, measurements). Significant figures fix total meaningful digits regardless of magnitude, which is what science and engineering usually need: 0.00314159 to 3 figures is 0.00314.

Rounding Calculator FAQs

What is banker's rounding for?
Financial and statistical totals. Rounding many exact halves up would bias sums upward; half-even keeps them neutral.
Why does 2.675 round oddly in some tools?
Binary floating point cannot store some decimals exactly. This tool rounds the decimal representation you typed, avoiding that surprise.
Can I round to tens or hundreds?
Use significant figures, or divide by 100, round to 0 decimals, and multiply back.
Does it handle negatives?
Yes. Half up rounds -2.5 to -3 (away from zero on the half); truncate moves toward zero.
Is anything uploaded?
No. All rounding happens locally in your browser.
