ROT13 for all ASCII

ROT47 generalizes ROT13 from letters to all 94 printable ASCII characters (codes 33 to 126). Each character shifts 47 places forward, wrapping around, so the same operation both encodes and decodes. It famously obfuscates spoilers, puzzle answers and joke punchlines on forums.

Obfuscation, not encryption

ROT47 has no key and a trivially reversible transform: anyone recognizing the output pattern decodes it instantly. It hides text from casual glances and naive scrapers, nothing more. Never use it for secrets.

ROT47 Cipher FAQs

How do I decode ROT47?
Apply ROT47 again: it is self-inverse, so encoding twice returns the original text. This tool's single button works both ways.
What characters does ROT47 change?
The 94 printable ASCII characters from ! (33) to ~ (126). Spaces, newlines and non-ASCII characters like emoji pass through unchanged.
ROT47 vs ROT13?
ROT13 rotates only the 26 letters by 13; ROT47 rotates all printable ASCII by 47. ROT47 also scrambles digits and punctuation, which ROT13 leaves readable.
Is ROT47 encryption?
No, it is obfuscation with no key. Treat it like a spoiler tag, not a lock.
Offline?
Yes, ROT47 is a few lines of JavaScript with no libraries and no uploads.
