Why pitch changes the area

A pitched roof is longer along the slope than its flat footprint, and the steeper the pitch, the bigger the difference. A 6/12 pitch multiplies the footprint by about 1.118, while a 12/12 pitch multiplies it by 1.414. The calculator applies this pitch factor to get the true surface roofers actually shingle.

Roofing squares and bundles

Roofers measure in squares, where one square equals 100 square feet of roof. Standard three tab and architectural shingles need three bundles per square, so the calculator converts your roof area into the bundle count suppliers quote.

Roof Pitch Area FAQs

How do I find my roof pitch?
Measure 12 inches horizontally in the attic and read how many inches the rafter rises over that run. A 6 inch rise over 12 inches is a 6/12 pitch, a common residential slope.
What is a roofing square?
One square is 100 square feet of roof surface. A 2,000 square foot roof is 20 squares, and shingle packaging is labeled in squares per bundle.
How many shingle bundles per square?
Three bundles per square for standard shingles. Ridge cap shingles are sold separately and are not included in the bundle count.
Does this work for hip roofs?
The pitch factor math is the same, but hip roofs have more waste from cutting angles. Use a 15 percent waste margin for hip roofs instead of 10.
Should I measure from the ground or the attic?
Building footprint from the outside walls is fine, but add the eave overhang to the width for accuracy. Roofers measure the actual slope, so overhangs matter.
