How ROI is calculated

ROI compares what you gained against what you spent: subtract the cost from the total return, divide by the cost, and express it as a percentage. A 50% ROI means you earned half your stake on top of getting it back. The calculator also shows the return multiple (1.5x) and, when you enter a holding period, the annualized rate so multi-year investments can be compared fairly.

Reading the result

Positive ROI means profit, negative means loss, and zero means you broke even. Use ROI to compare opportunities of different sizes, but remember it ignores risk and timing: two investments with the same ROI are not equal if one took five times longer.

ROI Calculator FAQs

What is the ROI formula?
ROI = (total return minus amount invested) divided by amount invested, times 100. For example, investing $1,000 and getting back $1,500 gives a 50% ROI.
What is a good ROI?
It depends on the asset. Stock markets have averaged roughly 7 to 10 percent per year historically, so beating that after risk is a common benchmark. Higher returns usually mean higher risk.
What does the return multiple mean?
It shows how many times your money came back. A 2.5x multiple means every $1 invested returned $2.50 in total, which equals a 150% ROI.
What is annualized ROI?
It spreads the total return evenly across each year of the holding period using compounding, so a 50% gain over 2 years becomes about 22.5% per year.
Does ROI include fees and taxes?
Only if you include them in your numbers. For an accurate figure, add purchase fees to the cost and subtract selling fees and taxes from the return before calculating.
