What the three scores mean

Flesch Reading Ease rates text from 0 to 100, where higher is easier: most adult nonfiction aims for 60 to 70. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level translates the same idea into a US school grade, so 8.0 means an eighth grader can follow it.

The Gunning Fog Index estimates years of formal schooling needed to understand the text on first reading. Business and web writing usually targets a Fog score under 12.

How accurate is it

These formulas count sentence length and syllable density, which correlate well with reading difficulty but cannot judge clarity, jargon, or structure. Use them as a guide while editing, not as a final verdict on your writing.

Scores are most reliable on passages of at least 100 words; very short texts produce noisy results.

Readability Score FAQs

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
60 to 70 is plain English suitable for most adults. Marketing copy often targets 70+, while academic papers commonly score 30 to 50.
What grade level should web content target?
Grade 8 or below is the common recommendation for general audiences. It keeps content accessible without dumbing it down.
Why does my short paragraph score strangely?
The formulas need enough sentences and words to average out. Under about 100 words, one long sentence can swing the score dramatically.
Does it work for languages other than English?
No. The syllable counting and formula constants are tuned for English. Other languages need their own readability formulas.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser, so drafts and unpublished writing stay private.
