Formula: Percent error = ((Experimental - True) / True) x 100. The sign tells you whether the measurement was high (+) or low (-).

How error is measured

Percent error divides the signed gap between your measurement and the accepted value by the accepted value. A result of +3% means the measurement read high; -3% means it read low. The absolute percent error drops the sign when you only care about magnitude.

Error vs difference

Percent error needs a known true value to measure against, which is why it is a lab staple. Percentage difference is used instead when you are comparing two measurements with no accepted reference, because it measures against their average.

Percentage Error FAQs

What is the percent error of 9.7 vs a true value of 9.8?
The percent error is (9.7 - 9.8) / 9.8 x 100 = -1.02%. The negative sign means the measurement was low, and the absolute error is 1.02%.
What does a negative percent error mean?
It means the experimental value came in below the true value. A positive percent error means it came in above. The sign is a useful diagnostic for systematic bias in an experiment.
Can percent error be over 100%?
Yes, when the measurement is more than double the true value. For example a reading of 25 against a true value of 10 is +150% error.
Why can the true value not be zero?
The formula divides by the true value, so a true value of zero makes the error undefined. In that case report the absolute error instead.
Does this tool store my measurements?
No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
