How the estimate works

Enter your gross pay per pay period and how often you are paid. The tool subtracts your estimated income-tax percentage, other payroll taxes and any fixed deductions like retirement contributions or insurance. What remains is your estimated take-home pay per paycheck and per year, plus your effective deduction rate.

Estimate, not tax advice

Real payroll taxes depend on brackets, allowances, pre-tax deductions and where you live, so this is a simplified planning figure. Use your actual tax rate from a recent pay stub for the closest estimate, and talk to a tax professional before making financial decisions.

Paycheck Estimator FAQs

What tax rate should I enter?
Use your effective rate from a recent pay stub: total tax withheld divided by gross pay. That single percentage usually lands closest to reality.
What counts as a fixed deduction?
Flat amounts taken every paycheck: retirement contributions, health insurance premiums, union dues or wage garnishments. Percentage-based items belong in the tax fields.
Does this handle overtime or bonuses?
Not separately. Add expected overtime to your gross pay per period, or run the estimate twice and combine the results for bonus-heavy months.
Why is my estimate different from my actual stub?
Real withholding uses tax brackets and pre-tax deductions that a flat percentage cannot fully model. The tool is designed for quick planning, not payroll accuracy.
Is my salary data stored anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser and nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.
