Nano ID vs ULID

Nano IDs are short, random, URL-safe strings (default 21 characters) with a huge alphabet, making collisions practically impossible. ULIDs are 26-character identifiers that start with a timestamp, so they sort chronologically while staying unique. Both are generated with the browser's cryptographic random source.

Why not plain UUIDs

UUIDs are 36 characters with dashes, which is bulky for URLs and database keys. Nano IDs pack similar uniqueness into fewer characters using a URL-safe alphabet, and ULIDs add time-ordering that UUID v4 lacks, both friendlier for modern apps.

Nano ID Generator FAQs

Are these IDs truly unique?
For practical purposes, yes. A 21-char Nano ID has 126 bits of randomness, so generating a billion IDs per second would take centuries to expect one collision. ULIDs add timestamp plus 80 random bits.
Nano ID or ULID, which should I use?
Use Nano IDs for compact random tokens like invite codes. Use ULIDs when you want IDs that sort by creation time, such as database primary keys or log entries.
Are the IDs URL-safe?
Yes. Nano IDs use only A-Z, a-z, 0-9, underscore and hyphen, and ULIDs use Crockford base32. Both drop safely into URLs, filenames and query strings.
Is the randomness cryptographically secure?
Yes. The generator uses window.crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's secure random source, never Math.random alone.
Can I generate IDs in bulk?
Yes, up to 500 at once. The list appears one per line, ready to copy into a seed script or spreadsheet.
