How the lookup works

One search box matches both directions: type png to see image/png, or type application/json to find the json extension. The leading dot is optional, and matching is case-insensitive, so PDF, .Pdf and pdf all work.

Why MIME types matter

Servers use the Content-Type header to tell browsers what a file is. A wrong MIME type is why a download opens as text, a font fails to load, or a video refuses to play. Looking up the correct type is the first step in fixing those bugs.

MIME Type Lookup FAQs

What is the MIME type of a PDF?
application/pdf. It is one of the most looked-up types because servers must send it for in-browser PDF viewers to open the file instead of downloading it.
Why do .jpg and .jpeg share a type?
They are the same format with two historical extensions. Both map to image/jpeg, so servers and browsers treat them identically.
What MIME type should I use for WOFF2 fonts?
font/woff2. Serving fonts with the wrong type (like application/octet-stream) triggers console warnings and can block loading in strict browsers.
My server sends the wrong type. How do I fix it?
Add the extension-to-type mapping in your server config: .htaccess AddType directives for Apache, mime.types for Nginx, or a static file config on your host or CDN.
Are all 60+ types here exhaustive?
No. These are the common web types. Thousands of vendor-specific types exist (like application/vnd.*); this covers what web developers look up most.
