Microphone Test

Is your microphone working? Enable it to see a live volume meter, switch input devices, and record a short test clip to play back. Free, private, nothing is uploaded.

Microphone check

Your browser will ask for microphone permission.

Live level

Level: 0% Microphone off.

Speak normally: the bar should dance between 20% and 80%. Peaking at 100% constantly means the input is too hot.

Test recording

No test recording yet.

How the test works

Press Enable microphone and approve the browser prompt. A live volume meter shows your input level in real time: speak normally and the bar should dance in the middle range. Constantly peaking at 100% means the input gain is too hot; barely moving means it is too quiet or the wrong device is selected.

Switch devices with the dropdown, then record a 5-second clip to hear exactly what others will hear.

Private by design

The audio stream is analyzed locally for the meter and the test recording stays in your browser's memory. Nothing is uploaded or stored on any server, so you can test freely.

If the browser never asks for permission, check the lock icon in the address bar: microphone access may be blocked for this site.

Microphone Test FAQs

Why is my microphone not detected?
First check the browser permission: click the lock or tune icon in the address bar and allow microphone access. Then check the OS privacy settings, which can block the browser entirely.
The meter barely moves when I speak. Why?
The input gain may be too low, or the wrong device is selected. Pick your actual microphone in the device dropdown and raise the input volume in your OS sound settings.
The meter is pinned at 100%. Is that bad?
Yes, that is clipping: loud parts distort. Lower the input volume in your OS settings until normal speech sits between 20% and 80% with peaks below the red zone.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The meter analyzes the stream locally, and the 5-second test recording lives only in your browser's memory for playback. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I test a Bluetooth headset?
Yes. Connect it first, then enable the microphone and select the headset in the device dropdown. Bluetooth mics often need a moment to initialize.
