How the clicks stay in time

The metronome uses the Web Audio API, which schedules each click against the audio hardware clock instead of a plain JavaScript timer. That keeps the beat steady even when the browser tab is busy, and the first beat of every bar plays a higher pitched click so you can feel the downbeat.

Picking a practice tempo

Start 10 to 20 BPM below your target tempo and raise it in small steps once a passage feels comfortable. Slow practice with a metronome builds even rhythm faster than jumping straight to full speed, and the volume slider lets you keep the clicks under your instrument.

Metronome FAQs

Why does the metronome need Web Audio support?
The clicks are synthesized with the Web Audio API for precise timing. Every modern desktop and mobile browser supports it, so you can practice on your phone, tablet or computer with nothing to install.
What tempo range does it cover?
From 40 BPM, slower than a largo, up to 220 BPM for very fast passages. Drag the slider for large jumps or use the arrow keys while the slider is focused for fine one BPM steps.
Can I change the time signature?
Yes, set beats per bar from 2 to 7. The first beat of each bar is accented with a higher click, and the dots light up so you can see where you are in the bar.
Why do the clicks drift if I switch tabs?
Browsers slow down background tabs to save battery, which can make the timing less exact. Keep the tab in the foreground while practicing for the most accurate clicks.
Is there a tap tempo feature?
This page is a fixed tempo metronome. If you need to find the tempo of a song first, use the BPM Tap Counter on this site, then dial that number into the metronome.
