How the Markdown formatter works

The formatter processes your document line by line outside of fenced code blocks. Headings get exactly one space after the hashes, bullets become dashes, numbered lists use the dot style, trailing whitespace is removed, and headings are separated from text by a blank line.

Why consistent Markdown matters

Different renderers are picky about spacing: a missing blank line before a heading can break it on some parsers. Normalized Markdown renders the same on GitHub, in static site generators and in documentation tools, and produces cleaner diffs in git.

Markdown Formatter FAQs

Will it change my code blocks?
No. Everything between triple backtick fences is passed through byte for byte, including indentation, so code samples and ASCII diagrams are never mangled.
Which list style does it use?
Unordered lists become dashes (-) and ordered lists use the number dot style (1.). If you prefer asterisks, do a quick find and replace on the formatted output.
Does it support tables?
Table rows are trimmed of trailing whitespace but column alignment is not recalculated. For pixel perfect tables, align the pipes manually after formatting.
Can it convert HTML to Markdown?
This tool only tidies Markdown that is already Markdown. Use the HTML to Markdown converter on this site to convert web pages first.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No. All formatting happens in your browser, so drafts, notes and internal docs never leave your device.
