How OUI lookup works

The first three bytes of a MAC address form the OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier), a block assigned to one manufacturer by the IEEE. Looking up those three bytes reveals which company made the network chip, which is how this tool identifies Apple, Cisco, Samsung and other vendors from a pasted address.

Coverage and limits

This table covers 30+ common vendors seen in homes, offices and labs. It is a sample, not the full IEEE registry of tens of thousands of assignments, so obscure or very new hardware may return no match. For exhaustive lookups, check the official IEEE OUI database.

MAC Vendor Lookup FAQs

Which part of a MAC identifies the vendor?
The first 6 hex characters (3 bytes) are the OUI, assigned to the manufacturer. Everything after that is a device serial chosen by the maker, so only the prefix identifies the vendor.
Can I paste a MAC in any format?
Yes. Colons, dashes, dots and plain 12-hex strings are all accepted. The tool strips separators and reads the first three bytes either way.
Why does my MAC show as unknown?
The table covers 30+ common vendors like Apple, Samsung, Cisco, Dell, HP, Intel and TP-Link. Rare, very new or unregistered OUIs will show as unknown, which does not mean the address is invalid.
Does the vendor tell me who owns the device?
No. The OUI identifies the chip maker, not the device owner. Many brands share chip vendors, and virtual machines or spoofed addresses can carry any OUI.
Is MAC vendor lookup a privacy risk?
The OUI is public registration data published by the IEEE, so looking it up reveals nothing private. It cannot identify a person, only a manufacturer.
