Lean body mass calculator

Lean body mass is everything that is not fat: muscle, bone, water, and organs. It is the number behind smarter protein targets and drug dosing, estimated here with the validated Boer formula.

The Boer formula

Validated against underwater weighing, Boer estimates lean mass from weight and height: men 0.407 x kg + 0.267 x cm - 19.2, women 0.252 x kg + 0.473 x cm - 48.3. Subtracting it from total weight gives fat mass and an implied body fat percentage.

Why lean mass matters

Protein needs, creatine doses, and many medications scale better with lean mass than total weight. Tracking lean mass over months also shows whether your training is building muscle or your diet is costing it.

Lean Body Mass FAQs

What is lean body mass vs fat free mass?
Nearly the same thing; lean body mass includes a small essential fat fraction. For practical purposes the terms are interchangeable.
How accurate is the Boer formula?
Good for typical adults, within a few percent of lab measures. Very muscular or obese bodies deviate because the formula only sees height and weight.
Why does lean mass matter for protein intake?
Protein feeds lean tissue, so 2 g per kg of lean mass is more precise than per kg of total weight, especially when overweight.
Can I increase lean body mass without gaining weight?
Yes, beginners and detrained lifters recomp: training plus high protein builds muscle while fat drops, keeping the scale flat.
Does lean mass include water?
Yes, body water sits inside lean tissue, which is why dehydration and creatine both move the number a little.
