How it works

Click inside the test box and press any key. The tool shows the key's name (key), its physical position identifier (code), the legacy numeric keyCode, and which location it came from (left, right, numpad or standard). Every press is also logged as a chip in the history, so you can verify a whole row of keys in one pass.

Finding dead keys

If a key never appears in the history, it is not registering at all: try cleaning under the keycap, testing another keyboard, or checking for software remapping. The code value is what developers care about most, since it identifies the physical key regardless of your keyboard layout.

Keyboard Tester FAQs

What is the difference between key and code?
key is the character produced (a, A, 1), which changes with Shift and layout. code is the physical key position (KeyA, Digit1), which stays the same on any layout.
A key does not register. Is my keyboard broken?
Possibly. If no event fires for a key while others work, the switch or membrane under it may have failed. Test with another keyboard to confirm.
Why do some keys show odd names?
Special keys report names like AudioVolumeUp or Meta. The code field still identifies the physical key precisely.
Does this work on mobile keyboards?
Partially. Virtual keyboards send key events inconsistently, so results on phones are less reliable than on physical keyboards.
Are my keystrokes sent anywhere?
No. Key events are handled locally in your browser and never leave your device.
