What makes good alt text

Good alt text describes the image's content and function in about a sentence: what is shown and why it matters on the page. It never starts with "image of" (screen readers announce that already) and it stays near 125 characters so nothing gets cut off.

How scoring works

Each check passes, warns or fails: presence, length, redundant openers, file extensions, keyword stuffing and descriptiveness. Warnings cost 10 points, failures 25, from a perfect 100. Decorative images are the exception: empty alt is correct there.

Alt Text Checker FAQs

Should every image have alt text?
Informative images yes. Purely decorative images should use empty alt="" so screen readers skip them.
Does alt text help SEO?
Yes. Search engines use it to understand images, and it powers image search rankings. Stuffing keywords hurts instead of helping.
How long should alt text be?
Around 125 characters or less. Most screen readers cut off longer text.
What about complex charts?
Keep alt to a one-line summary and put the full data in adjacent text or a linked description.
Is my input uploaded?
No. Checking runs entirely in your browser.
