The Devine formula

Published in 1974 for drug dosing, it starts at 50 kg for men and 45.5 kg for women at 5 feet (152 cm), then adds 2.3 kg per inch above. The result is a lean reference weight, not a beauty standard.

A target, not a verdict

Muscular people will exceed it healthily and small-framed people may sit under it. Use the 10 percent range as a ballpark, and judge fitness by strength, waist, and body fat rather than the scale alone.

Ideal Body Weight FAQs

What is the Devine formula?
Men: 50 + 2.3 x (height in inches - 60). Women: 45.5 + 2.3 x (height in inches - 60). A 175 cm man lands near 70.5 kg.
Is ideal body weight the same as healthy weight?
Roughly. It is a lean reference from medicine; healthy weight spans a range around it depending on frame and muscle.
Why do men and women get different results?
The formula bakes in average differences in muscle mass and frame: men start 4.5 kg higher at the same height.
What if I am under 152 cm tall?
The formula was calibrated above 5 feet and gets shaky below it. Treat the number as a rough guide only at shorter heights.
Should athletes aim for ideal body weight?
Not necessarily. A muscular 180 cm lifter at 90 kg is healthy but far above the 75 kg Devine figure. Body composition matters more.
