How formatting works

The formatter tokenizes your markup into tags and text, then tracks nesting depth to indent each line. Void elements like img and br never increase depth, and the contents of pre, script, style and textarea blocks are preserved verbatim so code samples and whitespace-sensitive text survive intact.

Limits to know

This is a lightweight beautifier, not a validator: it will not fix mismatched tags or quote attribute values for you. Severely broken markup may indent oddly, which itself is a useful signal that something needs fixing. Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs to match your project style.

HTML Formatter FAQs

Will it fix broken HTML?
No. It only re-indents; mismatched or unclosed tags are left as-is. Odd indentation in the output often reveals where the markup is broken.
Does it change my code's behavior?
No. Only whitespace between tags is adjusted, and whitespace-sensitive blocks like pre and textarea are untouched, so rendering stays identical.
Can it minify HTML instead?
Not in this version. The tool formats for readability; for minification use a dedicated HTML minifier.
Why is my inline JavaScript preserved as-is?
Script and style contents are kept verbatim because re-indenting code can break strings and regexes. Format JS and CSS with their dedicated tools.
Is my code uploaded anywhere?
No. Formatting runs entirely in your browser, so proprietary markup never leaves your device.
