What hexadecimal is

Hexadecimal is base-16 notation: every byte of data becomes exactly two characters from 0-9 and a-f. It is the standard way to display binary data, hashes, colors and memory dumps in a readable form. Encoding turns your text's UTF-8 bytes into hex pairs; decoding reverses it.

Why UTF-8 matters

Older converters only handled ASCII and mangled anything else. This tool encodes with UTF-8, the web's standard text encoding, so characters from any language and all emoji round-trip through hex without corruption.

Hex Encoder/Decoder FAQs

How do I read a hex string?
Read it in pairs: each two characters represent one byte. For example, 48 65 6c 6c 6f decodes to the word Hello in UTF-8.
Why does my hex decode fail?
Valid hex needs an even number of digits using only 0-9 and a-f. Spaces and colons between bytes are allowed and ignored; anything else triggers the error.
Is hex encoding the same as encryption?
No. Hex is just a different way of writing the same data and is trivially reversible. Never treat it as a way to hide secrets.
What is hex used for in real life?
Displaying cryptographic hashes, color codes like #ff5c8a, binary file dumps, MAC addresses and debugging network data.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. Encoding and decoding run entirely in your browser.
