How weighting works

Each assignment contributes its score times its weight, divided by the total weight. Weights are normalized automatically, so whether you enter 20/30/50 or 2/3/5, the math comes out the same.

Leave a score blank for work not yet graded: it is excluded until you enter it, which makes this handy for what-if planning.

Letter grade scales

The standard scale uses straight cutoffs: A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60. The plus/minus scale adds the in-between steps most US colleges use, starting A at 93.

Grading scales vary by school and country, so confirm your institution's cutoffs if the letter matters officially.

Grade Calculator FAQs

How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply each score by its weight, add those up, and divide by the total weight. For 92 at weight 20 and 85 at weight 30, that is (92×20 + 85×30) ÷ 50 = 87.8.
Do my weights need to add up to 100?
No. They are normalized automatically, so 20/30/50 and 2/3/5 give identical results. The result card shows the total weight counted so you can sanity-check your entries.
What if I haven't taken the final yet?
Leave its score blank and it is excluded from the average. Enter hypothetical scores to see what final-exam result you need for your target grade.
Can scores go over 100 with extra credit?
Yes, scores above 100 are accepted and counted normally, so extra credit flows through the weighting like any other points.
Which letter scale should I use?
Use whichever your school publishes. The standard scale is common in K-12; the plus/minus scale with A starting at 93 is typical at US colleges.
