Multiplying, not adding

The geometric mean multiplies all values and takes the nth root. For growth factors like 1.05 (up 5%) and 0.97 (down 3%), it gives the constant rate that would produce the same final result: about 1.058 for the default data, or 5.8% average growth.

When it beats the average

Use the geometric mean for ratios, rates, and investment returns, where values compound. The ordinary arithmetic mean overstates average growth because it ignores compounding; the geometric mean never exceeds it.

Geometric Mean FAQs

What is the geometric mean of 1.05, 1.10, 0.97, 1.12?
About 1.0584. These are preloaded; as growth factors that means roughly 5.8% average growth per period.
Why must values be positive?
The nth root of a negative product is not a real number for even n, and zero collapses the product to zero. Growth factors and ratios are naturally positive anyway.
Geometric vs arithmetic mean: which for returns?
Geometric. An investment up 100% then down 50% ends flat: the geometric mean is 1.0 (0% average), while the arithmetic mean wrongly says +25%.
Can I paste spreadsheet data?
Yes, any mix of commas, spaces, tabs, semicolons or line breaks works.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All math runs in your browser.
