A cone with the tip cut off

A frustum is what remains when the top is sliced off a cone. Its volume is (1/3) pi h (R^2 + Rr + r^2): notice that setting the top radius to zero recovers the familiar cone formula (1/3) pi R^2 h, a nice consistency check.

Lateral surface too

The slanted side unwraps into a ring sector. Its area is pi (R + r) s, where the slant height s = sqrt((R - r)^2 + h^2) comes from Pythagoras on the side profile. Buckets, lampshades, and planters are all frustums.

Frustum Volume FAQs

What is the volume of a frustum with r=3, R=5, h=4?
About 205.25: (1/3) x pi x 4 x (25 + 15 + 9) = 196 pi / 3. The defaults are preloaded so you see it immediately.
What is the frustum volume formula?
V = (1/3) pi h (R^2 + Rr + r^2), where R is the bottom radius, r the top radius, and h the vertical height.
How do you find the slant height?
s = sqrt((R - r)^2 + h^2). It is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the height and the radius difference.
What is the lateral surface area?
pi (R + r) s, the area of the sloped side without the top and bottom circles. The tool shows it next to the volume.
