Decimal vs binary units

There are two competing definitions. Storage makers and networks use decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. Operating systems and RAM traditionally use binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, though they still label it KB. That is why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows. Tick the binary box to use powers of 1024.

How conversion works

Every unit is a power of the base multiplier above bytes, so converting is just multiplication or division by 1000 (or 1024) raised to the step distance. Type one value and the tool computes all six units at once.

File Size Converter FAQs

Why does my 1 TB drive show less in Windows?
Drive makers define 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but Windows divides by 1024 repeatedly, which yields about 931 GB. Both numbers describe the same drive.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KB is ambiguous: usually 1000 bytes in decimal contexts or 1024 in binary ones. KiB unambiguously means 1024 bytes per the IEC standard.
Which should I use for internet speed?
Decimal. Network speeds are measured in decimal bits per second, so a 100 Mbps plan is 100,000,000 bits per second.
How many MB are in a GB?
1000 MB in decimal (SI) terms, or 1024 MiB in binary terms. This tool lets you pick either convention.
Does this tool send my input anywhere?
No. Conversion is pure arithmetic done locally in your browser.
