What makes a filename clean

Web-safe filenames are lowercase, use hyphens or underscores instead of spaces, and contain no accents or special symbols. This avoids broken links, encoding bugs on servers, and ugly %20 sequences in URLs. The tool also preserves file extensions and collapses repeated separators.

Preview before you rename

Pick real files from your device to preview exactly what each would become, or paste a list of names to process in bulk. The tool only shows you the cleaned names; it never renames files on your disk, so you stay in control of the actual renaming step.

File Name Cleaner FAQs

Why should filenames be lowercase?
Many web servers treat MyPhoto.jpg and myphoto.jpg as different files. Lowercase names prevent broken images and links when moving between systems.
Hyphens or underscores: which is better?
Hyphens are the safer default. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators, and they never cause issues in URLs or command lines.
Does it rename files on my computer?
No. The tool only generates the cleaned names for you to copy. Renaming on disk is left to you or your file manager.
What happens to accents like e or n?
They are converted to their plain equivalents (e becomes e, n becomes n), keeping names readable while removing encoding risks.
Are file extensions preserved?
Yes. The extension is separated before cleaning and reattached afterwards, lowercased along with the name if that option is on.
