Know your file

Drop anything in to see its true size in bytes, MIME type, extension, and last-modified date at a glance. A SHA-256 fingerprint is computed so you can verify a download against the hash published by its source.

Text-based files get a readable preview of their first 2000 characters, and images render a thumbnail, all without opening another app.

Verify before you trust

Matching the SHA-256 hash proves a file arrived intact and untampered, which matters for software installers, datasets, and email attachments. Compare the shown hash character by character with the official one.

Everything is read locally, so even suspicious files can be inspected without uploading them anywhere.

File Inspector FAQs

What is a SHA-256 hash used for?
It is a unique fingerprint of the file's contents. If even one byte changes, the hash changes completely, so it proves integrity and authenticity.
Why does the MIME type say unknown?
Some files, especially without extensions or from certain systems, carry no type information. The extension and preview still help identify them.
Can it preview binary files?
Only images get a visual preview. Other binary files show metadata and the hash; their contents are not human-readable.
How large a file can I inspect?
There is no hard limit, but hashing multi-gigabyte files takes a while because the whole file is read into memory. Files up to a few hundred MB inspect in seconds.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
Never. The FileReader and Web Crypto APIs run entirely in your browser, so the file stays on your device.
