How the post count is figured

Posts go at each end of every section plus one at the start, so the count is the number of sections plus one. Gates need an extra post each for the hinges and latch. Spacing posts 8 feet apart is standard for wood fences because longer spans let the rails sag.

Picket math with gaps

Pickets are counted by dividing the total fence inches by the picket width plus the gap between pickets. A 5 percent extra covers warped or split pickets. For shadowbox or board on board styles the effective coverage per picket drops, so add 10 percent instead.

Fence Material Calc FAQs

How deep should fence posts be set?
Set posts one third of their above ground height, with a minimum of 2 feet for a 6 foot fence. In frost areas, go below the local frost line to stop heaving.
How much concrete per fence post?
One 50 pound bag per post is a good estimate for a 4 by 4 post in an 8 inch hole. Larger holes or 6 by 6 posts may need two bags each.
How many pickets do I need for 100 feet?
About 218 pickets at 5.5 inches wide with no gap, plus 5 percent extra. The calculator includes the extra automatically.
Do I need 2 or 3 rails per section?
Use 2 rails for fences up to 4 feet tall and 3 rails for 5 to 6 foot privacy fences. The middle rail stops tall pickets from warping.
Should I count the gate opening in the length?
Measure the full run including gates, since the gate area still needs its posts, frame and hardware. The calculator adds posts for each gate you enter.
