How the builder works

Pick a function to see its plain-English description and argument list. Fill each argument with a cell reference, range or literal value, and the tool assembles a syntactically valid formula live. Optional arguments can be left blank and are dropped automatically.

Literals vs references

Type text in double quotes ("Paid"), leave numbers and references bare (A1, 3). The example under each function shows the exact quoting style it expects.

Excel Formula Helper FAQs

Does it check my formula for errors?
It assembles valid syntax from your inputs, but it cannot verify that your cell references exist. Paste into Excel or Sheets and watch for #REF or #NAME errors.
Why are some arguments optional?
Functions like TEXTJOIN and PMT work with defaults for trailing arguments. Blank optional fields are omitted from the generated formula.
Do these work in Google Sheets?
Almost all do. XLOOKUP and TEXTJOIN work in both Excel (Microsoft 365) and Sheets; older Excel versions may lack XLOOKUP.
Can I nest functions?
Yes. Type any expression as an argument value, for example IF(SUM(A1:A5)>100,"Big","Small").
Is anything uploaded?
No. The builder runs entirely in your browser.
