How engagement rate is calculated

Engagement rate is total interactions (likes, comments, shares, saves) divided by followers, times 100. It measures what share of your audience actively responded, which matters more than raw follower counts.

If you enter reach, the tool also shows ER by reach, the version many brand reports prefer, since it measures against people who actually saw the post.

What the numbers mean

As a rough guide: above 6% is excellent, 3 to 6% is good, 1 to 3% is average, and under 1% suggests the content or timing needs work. Benchmarks vary by niche and platform.

Small accounts usually score higher because a larger share of followers sees each post. Compare against your own history first, then against niche averages.

Engagement Rate Calc FAQs

Which formula do brands use?
Most use interactions divided by followers. Some use reach instead. This tool shows both so your number matches whichever your partner asks for.
Do views count as engagement?
No. Views measure exposure, not action. Likes, comments, shares and saves are the interactions that count.
Why is my ER dropping as I grow?
Normal. Follower growth usually outpaces interaction growth, and algorithms show posts to a smaller share of a big audience. Focus on the trend, not one post.
What is a good ER on TikTok vs Instagram?
TikTok averages run higher thanks to discovery feeds; Instagram feed posts average lower. Compare within the same platform and format.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All numbers stay in your browser.
