Formula: Area = pi x a x b. Circumference uses Ramanujan's approximation; eccentricity = sqrt(1 - b^2/a^2).

Pi times a times b

An ellipse is a stretched circle, and its area stretches the same way: pi x a x b, where a and b are the semi-major and semi-minor axes. When a equals b you get a circle and the formula collapses to pi r^2, as it should.

Circumference is harder

Unlike area, ellipse circumference has no simple exact formula, so the tool uses Ramanujan's celebrated approximation, accurate to many decimal places for ordinary ellipses. Eccentricity, from 0 (circle) toward 1 (very flat), describes the shape.

Ellipse Area FAQs

What is the area of an ellipse with axes 5 and 3?
pi x 5 x 3 = about 47.12. Enter a = 5, b = 3 to see it with the circumference estimate.
What is the formula for ellipse area?
Area = pi x a x b, where a is the semi-major axis and b is the semi-minor axis. Both are half the full width, not the full width.
How accurate is the circumference?
It uses Ramanujan's approximation, which is extremely close for normal ellipses and only slightly off for extremely flat ones.
What does eccentricity tell me?
How stretched the ellipse is: 0 is a perfect circle, values near 1 are long and flat. Planetary orbits are described this way.
Does the tool store my inputs?
No. Everything is computed in your browser and never uploaded.
