How the comparison works

Both texts are split into lines and compared with a longest-common-subsequence algorithm, the same family of algorithms used by code diff tools. Lines that exist in both are shown plainly. Lines only in the original show in red with a minus, and lines only in the changed text show in green with a plus. The comparison is exact, so even a single extra space marks a line as changed.

When a diff checker helps

  • Proofreading: see exactly what an editor changed in your draft.
  • Version checks: confirm a terms page or price list changed only where intended.
  • Config files: spot the line that broke something between two settings files.
  • Plagiarism sanity checks: compare suspicious passages against your original.

Text diff checker FAQs

How does the diff checker compare texts?
It compares the two texts line by line using a longest-common-subsequence algorithm. Lines only in the original show red with a minus sign, and lines only in the changed text show green with a plus sign.
Does it compare word by word?
No. The comparison is line by line. If you change one word in a paragraph, the whole line counts as removed and added.
Is there a size limit?
Very large texts are refused to keep the page responsive. Split huge documents into smaller parts and compare them section by section.
What does the plus and minus mean?
A minus line was in the original text but not in the changed text. A plus line appears only in the changed text. Unchanged lines show without a marker.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The comparison runs in your browser with JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device.
