Straight-line vs declining balance

Straight-line spreads cost minus salvage evenly across the useful life, giving the same charge every year. Declining balance applies a fixed rate to the remaining book value each year, so early years carry heavier charges. The rate defaults to 200% (double-declining) but you can set any rate.

Reading the schedule

Each row shows the year's depreciation charge, the running accumulated total, and the remaining book value. Declining-balance stops at the salvage value and may finish early; straight-line always runs the full life.

Depreciation Calc FAQs

Which method should I choose?
Straight-line for assets that lose value evenly (furniture, buildings); declining balance for assets that lose value fast early on (vehicles, tech). Check local tax rules before filing.
What is salvage value?
The estimated resale or scrap value at the end of the asset's useful life. Depreciation never writes the asset below this value.
Why did declining balance finish early?
Once the book value reaches salvage value there is nothing left to depreciate, so the schedule stops.
Can the rate be something other than double?
Yes. Enter any rate: 150% is common for some asset classes, and higher rates front-load the charge more aggressively.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is a planning estimate. Depreciation rules vary by country; confirm with an accountant for tax filings.
