How the breakdown works

The calculator uses a greedy algorithm: starting from the largest bill, it takes as many as fit, then moves to the next smaller one. For standard currency systems this produces the fewest bills and coins possible.

Choose a preset currency or type your own denominations, useful for cash drawers with limited notes, arcade tokens, or classroom exercises.

Reading the result

Each row shows a denomination, how many of it you need, and its subtotal. The remainder line appears when the amount cannot be formed exactly, for example 3 cents with a smallest coin of 5 cents.

All math runs in whole cents internally to avoid floating-point rounding errors that plague money calculations.

Cash Denominations FAQs

Which method does it use to break down amounts?
A greedy algorithm from largest to smallest denomination, which gives the minimum number of bills and coins for all standard currency systems.
Can I use denominations not in the presets?
Yes. Choose Custom denominations and type your own values, largest first, separated by commas.
Why is there a remainder?
The amount cannot be formed exactly with the available denominations, for example 0.03 with a smallest coin of 0.05. Add a smaller denomination to fix it.
Does it handle cash rounding like in some countries?
Not automatically. If your country rounds to the nearest 5 cents, enter a pre-rounded amount or use custom denominations without small coins.
Is my amount sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
