Which format to choose

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it ideal for logos, screenshots and graphics. JPEG compresses photos dramatically with small quality loss and no transparency. WebP gives you the best of both: smaller files than either at similar quality, with transparency support, and it works in all modern browsers.

How conversion works

Your image is decoded and redrawn onto a canvas, then re-encoded in the target format at your chosen quality. JPEG gets a white background first since it cannot store transparency. The tool shows before and after sizes so you can judge the trade-off.

Convert Image Format FAQs

Will converting reduce quality?
PNG to anything is safe. Converting to JPEG or WebP applies lossy compression, so quality drops slightly; higher quality settings keep it visually identical for most photos.
Why did my PNG get bigger as JPEG?
It should not usually. But converting a simple graphic with flat colors to JPEG can sometimes increase size; the before/after readout tells you exactly what happened.
What happens to transparency in JPEG?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white during conversion. Use PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, conversion and the download all happen locally in your browser.
What is the maximum image size?
Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Very large photos (tens of megapixels) work but may take a few seconds.
