The four operations

Addition and subtraction work part by part: real with real, imaginary with imaginary. Multiplication uses the FOIL-style rule (ac - bd) + (ad + bc)i, remembering that i squared is -1. Division multiplies top and bottom by the conjugate of the divisor to clear i from the denominator.

Magnitude and conjugate

The magnitude |z| = sqrt(x^2 + y^2) is the distance from the origin in the complex plane. The conjugate flips the sign of the imaginary part, and a number times its conjugate always gives a real number: the squared magnitude.

Complex Numbers FAQs

What is (3+2i) x (1-4i)?
(3+2i)(1-4i) = 11 - 10i. The defaults are preloaded: select z1 x z2 to see it.
How do you divide complex numbers?
Multiply numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. For (3+2i)/(1-4i) the answer is (-5+14i)/17, about -0.294 + 0.824i.
What is the magnitude of 3+4i?
sqrt(9 + 16) = 5. The Magnitude row shows |z| for every result.
What is a complex conjugate?
The same number with the imaginary sign flipped: the conjugate of 3+2i is 3-2i. It is used to divide complex numbers.
