Straight commission math
This calculator handles straight commission: one flat rate on total sales. Multiply sales by the rate and you have the payout. Many real plans add tiers, bonuses or draw-against-commission rules on top, which need the plan document, not a formula.
Planning backwards from a target
Enter the commission you want to earn and the tool works backwards to the sales figure that produces it at your rate. Useful for quota planning and for sanity-checking whether a target is realistic.
Multiply total sales by the commission rate and divide by 100. On $50,000 of sales at 5%, the commission is $50,000 x 5 / 100 = $2,500.
How much do I need to sell to earn a target commission?
Divide the target by the rate as a decimal. To earn $3,000 at 5%, you need $3,000 / 0.05 = $60,000 in sales.
What is a typical sales commission rate?
It varies widely: retail often pays 2-5%, B2B software 10-20%, and real estate commonly splits around 5-6% of the deal. Your plan document is the only number that matters.
Does this handle tiered commission rates?
No. This tool calculates a single flat rate. Tiered plans, where the rate rises after hitting thresholds, need each tier calculated separately.
