How color matching works

The tool compares your color against a curated list of 150 named web colors using a weighted RGB distance formula that approximates how the human eye perceives difference. The closest name wins, and the next five nearest are shown as alternatives in case a sibling shade fits your intent better.

Using the results

Designers use color names as shared vocabulary with clients and in design tokens, while developers can drop the hex values straight into CSS. Pick a color with the swatch picker for exploration, or paste an exact hex code from a screenshot or brand guide.

Color Name Finder FAQs

How accurate is the color name?
It finds the closest match from 150 named colors using perceptual color distance. For very unusual shades the nearest name is an approximation, so check the alternatives list too.
Can I enter colors without the # symbol?
Yes. Both 7c3aed and #7c3aed work, as do 3-digit shorthand codes like f0a.
Why do two similar colors have different names?
Named colors come from web history and design tradition rather than a strict system, so close shades often carry distinct names like Coral and Tomato.
Can I use the hex values in my CSS?
Yes. Every result shows its hex code, which you can paste directly into stylesheets, design tools or color pickers.
Does the tool store the colors I check?
No. Matching runs entirely in your browser and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
