How it works

Choose a cipher and a direction, then press Convert. Caesar shifts every letter by your chosen amount (3 is the classic). ROT13 is Caesar with a fixed shift of 13, applied the same way both directions. Atbash mirrors the alphabet (A becomes Z, B becomes Y). Base64 is not a cipher but an encoding that turns any text, including Unicode, into plain ASCII safe for URLs and data fields.

A note on security

These are classical ciphers for puzzles, learning and fun, not for protecting real secrets. Caesar, ROT13 and Atbash can be broken by hand in minutes. Never use them for passwords or private data; modern encryption like AES is what protects information for real.

Cipher Tools FAQs

What is the Caesar cipher?
A substitution cipher that shifts each letter by a fixed number of positions. With a shift of 3, A becomes D, B becomes E, and so on.
What is ROT13 used for?
Mostly for hiding spoilers and puzzle answers online. Applying ROT13 twice returns the original text, so the same operation encodes and decodes.
How does Atbash work?
It reverses the alphabet: A becomes Z, B becomes Y, C becomes X. Like ROT13, encoding and decoding are the same operation.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it instantly. It exists to represent binary or Unicode text in plain ASCII characters.
Can I use these ciphers to protect passwords?
No. Classical ciphers are trivially breakable and offer zero real security. Use a password manager and proper encryption instead.
