What canonical tags do

Search engines treat http vs https, www vs non-www, and trailing-slash variants as separate URLs. A canonical tag points them all at one preferred version so ranking signals consolidate instead of splitting.

Every page should carry a self-referencing canonical tag in its head, even if you think you have no duplicates.

Normalization choices

The generator cleans the URL before emitting the tag: forcing https, stripping www, removing tracking query strings, and standardizing the trailing slash. Pick the variants that match your site's actual preferred URLs.

The golden rule: the canonical URL must return a 200 page, not redirect elsewhere.

Canonical Generator FAQs

Where do I put the canonical tag?
Inside the <head> section of the page it describes, alongside your title and meta tags. One per page.
Should the canonical URL have a trailing slash?
Match whatever your site actually serves. Consistency matters more than the choice itself.
Can a canonical point to a different page?
Yes, that is its main job: duplicate or near-duplicate pages point their canonical at the preferred version.
Do query strings belong in canonicals?
Usually not. Tracking parameters like ?utm_source create duplicate URLs, so strip them as this tool does by default.
Is the generated tag absolute or relative?
Absolute, including the protocol and domain. Search engines require absolute canonical URLs.
