How tap tempo works

Each tap records a timestamp, and the tempo is 60,000 divided by the average milliseconds between taps. Outlier taps are discarded using the median interval, so one early or late tap does not wreck the reading, and tapping more than 8 times gives a very stable number.

Half time and double time traps

Tapping on half notes reports half the true tempo and tapping sixteenths reports double. If the result looks wrong, tap twice as fast or twice as slow and see which number matches the song's feel, or compare with the song's genre norms.

BPM Tap Counter FAQs

How many taps do I need for an accurate BPM?
At least 4 taps, but 8 to 16 taps gives a much steadier reading. The counter discards stray taps automatically, so keep tapping through the chorus.
Why does the BPM jump around while I tap?
Early readings use few intervals, so each tap moves the average a lot. It settles as you add taps. If it never settles, you may be tapping an inconsistent rhythm.
Can I tap with the keyboard?
Yes, focus the TAP button and press Space or Enter to tap. Many people find keyboard tapping more precise than clicking.
The result is half what I expected, why?
You tapped on beats 1 and 3 (half notes) instead of every quarter note. Tap twice as fast to get the true tempo.
Does it work for songs with tempo changes?
Only for the section you tap. For songs that speed up or slow down, tap during the specific part you care about and reset between sections.
