How the Navy formula works

Developed for military fitness testing, it uses logarithmic relationships between circumference sites: neck, waist, and hips for women. Because waist tracks abdominal fat closely, the formula estimates total body fat within about 3 to 4 percent of lab methods for most people.

Measuring tips that matter

Measure in the morning, tape snug against skin without compressing, waist at the narrowest point, neck below the Adam's apple, hips at the widest point for women. A 1 cm error at the waist shifts the result by roughly 1 percent.

Body Fat Navy Method FAQs

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?
Within about 3 to 4 percent of DEXA for typical adults. It struggles with very muscular or very obese bodies, where waist size misleads the formula.
Why do women need a hip measurement?
The female formula includes hips because women store more fat in the lower body. Skipping it makes the estimate meaningless, so it is required.
What body fat percentage is healthy?
Roughly 10 to 20 percent for men and 18 to 28 percent for women. Athletes run lower; dropping near essential levels (under 5% men, 12% women) harms hormones and health.
Should I measure in inches or centimeters?
This calculator takes centimeters and converts internally. The original formula uses inches, but the math is identical either way.
Why is my result negative or absurd?
A waist smaller than the neck, or mixed-up units, breaks the logarithms. Remeasure carefully; the tape must be snug and level.
