How runtime is estimated

Capacity in amp hours times voltage gives watt hours of stored energy. Multiplying by the usable depth of discharge and an 85 percent inverter efficiency gives the energy you can actually draw, and dividing by the load in watts gives the runtime in hours.

Depth of discharge by chemistry

Lead acid batteries last longest when discharged only 50 percent, while lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) safely uses 80 percent. Draining any battery to zero regularly shortens its life, so the calculator defaults to chemistry safe values.

Battery Runtime Calc FAQs

How long will a 100Ah battery run a 50W load?
A 100Ah 12V battery holds 1,200 Wh. At 80 percent usable depth and 85 percent efficiency that is 816 Wh, or about 16 hours for a 50 watt load.
How do I convert amp hours to watt hours?
Multiply amp hours by voltage. A 100Ah 12V battery stores 1,200 watt hours, the same energy as a 50Ah 24V battery.
Why does the calculator use 85 percent efficiency?
Inverters and wiring lose energy as heat, typically 10 to 20 percent. Using 85 percent keeps the estimate realistic instead of theoretical.
Does cold weather affect battery runtime?
Yes. Lead acid capacity drops noticeably below freezing, and lithium batteries should not be charged below 0 C. Expect shorter runtime in winter.
Can I connect batteries for more runtime?
Yes, wire batteries in parallel to add amp hours at the same voltage. Use identical batteries at the same charge level and keep cable lengths equal.
