What ID3 tags are

MP3 files can carry a metadata block: ID3v2 at the start of the file holds text frames for title, artist, album, track number and more, while the older ID3v1 tacks 128 fixed bytes onto the end. Music players read these frames to display what is playing. This tool parses both versions byte by byte in your browser.

Why tags go wrong

Tags are often written by ripping software with wrong encodings or left blank entirely. Checking them here tells you whether a mislabeled track is a file problem or a player problem before you start retagging.

Audio Metadata Viewer FAQs

Which tag fields are shown?
Title, artist, album, track number, year, genre, composer and comment, from ID3v2 text frames with an ID3v1 fallback.
Why are some fields empty?
The file simply does not contain those frames. Many MP3s only carry a title and artist, or no tags at all.
Can I edit tags with this tool?
No, this is a viewer only. It reads tags without modifying the file.
Does it work with M4A or FLAC?
No. This tool parses MP3 ID3 tags specifically; other formats use different tagging systems.
Is my audio file uploaded?
No. The file is read and parsed entirely in your browser.
