Volume and weight math

Volume is length times width times water depth, divided by 1,000 for liters when measured in centimeters. A liter of water weighs a kilogram, so a 60 liter tank weighs over 60 kg before glass and substrate, which is why stands must be rated for the filled weight.

Heater and filter rules of thumb

Heaters are sized at about 5 watts per gallon for rooms near normal temperature, and filters should turn over 4 to 6 times the tank volume per hour. Cold rooms need more heater wattage, and messy fish like goldfish need stronger filtration.

Aquarium Volume Calc FAQs

How many liters is a 60x30x35 cm tank?
63 liters, or about 16.6 gallons. Enter your exact inside dimensions above, since glass thickness and low water levels reduce the real volume.
What size heater does my aquarium need?
About 5 watts per gallon in a normally heated room. A 20 gallon tank needs roughly a 100 watt heater; cold rooms or large tanks do better with two smaller heaters.
How strong should my aquarium filter be?
Aim for 4 to 6 times the tank volume per hour. A 60 liter tank wants 240 to 360 liters per hour of filter flow.
How much does a filled aquarium weigh?
Roughly 1 kg per liter of water plus glass, substrate and equipment. A 200 liter setup can exceed 250 kg, so it needs a dedicated stand on a solid floor.
Does substrate reduce the water volume?
Yes, gravel and decorations displace water. A deep substrate bed can cut 5 to 10 percent off the calculated volume, which matters for medication dosing.
