What the four principles mean

WCAG organizes accessibility into POUR: content must be Perceivable (visible to eyes, ears and assistive tech), Operable (usable by keyboard and other inputs), Understandable (clear language and predictable behavior) and Robust (correct markup that assistive technology can parse). The checklist groups practical checks under each principle.

Why this matters beyond compliance

Accessible sites reach more people, rank better, and are simply easier for everyone to use: captions help in noisy rooms, keyboard support helps power users, and good contrast helps on sunny screens. Many countries also require it by law for public-facing sites.

A11y Checklist FAQs

Is this a full WCAG audit?
No. It covers the most impactful, commonly-missed checks in plain language. A formal audit against all WCAG success criteria needs a specialist and assistive-technology testing.
What does POUR stand for?
Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust: the four organizing principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
Which items fail most often?
Missing alt text, low color contrast, unlabeled form fields and keyboard traps are the repeat offenders in most audits.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, automatically in your browser's local storage, so you can audit across multiple sessions.
Does passing this guarantee compliance?
No. It is a strong starting point, not a legal certification. Treat it as a practical sweep before deeper testing.
